One of my clients, whose house we have just redecorated and looks absolutely fabulous, told me that she loves a cushion – she has cushions on settees, chairs and beds. So much so, that she has to go up to bed before her husband, so she can remove the five cushions on their bed or her husband will be annoyed. In fact, her husband has told her that if she has another cushion made then she must dispose of one. They are strictly on a one cushion in and one cushion out basis in their relationship!
Anyone identify with this scenario?
We agree wholeheartedly with our client rather than her husband, as decorating with cushions may seem like a small part of the design process, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. They are the best way to elevate a house to a home. When it comes to living room seating, benches and pretty much anything in the bedroom, adding a cushion will pack a ton of punch and bring out the subtle design features of the space as well as adding comfort and a touch of luxury.
In order to tackle the full potential of these decorative do-gooders, we’ve rounded up a few tips that will make the styling process a lot easier.
- Pick an anchor colour for your cushion to ensure the rest of the room is highlighted without outshining it.
- Mix and match prints to keep the eye engaged.
- Play with proportion/shape and have fun with texture. For example, pair a faux fur cushion with a floral or geometric one. Don’t shy away from experimenting.
- Think about symmetry. Once you’ve got all the right cushions, you should also spend some time thinking about how you’d like to display them to get the most out of their decor potential. If you like the look of assymetry, try an arrangement that looks random and effortless.
So embrace these decorative do-gooders and have a cushion crush!
